Sigurd Mathisen, born in Kristiania, was one of the best Norwegian skaters in the period of 1902-1911. In the last part of his career he was overshadowed by his four years younger brother - Oscar Mathisen.
In 1904 he won his only title - the World Title - after series of circumstances: The World Championships were to be held in the Dutch city of Groningen, but due to mild weather the races were moved to Kristiania the following weekend. Because of this there was no competition from foreign skaters. All 14 participants were Norwegians. Just in time for the championships former top-skater Peter Sinnerud came back from USA. He entered the competition and won all 4 distances. Sigurd Mathisen placed 2nd on the 3 longest distances. Since Sinnerud had been competing against professionals in USA, the NSF and ISU later disqualified him for being professional, and Sigurd Mathisen was given the World Title.
Highest rank on the Adelskalender: 7 (1909-1910)
