Franz Fredrik Wathén
* 30 March 1878 – Unknown
† 21 October 1914 – Unknown
Franz Frederik Wathén became the first Finnish World Champion by winning the World Championships 1901 in Stockholm. In 1903 no World Champion was declared, as no skater won sufficient distances. The champion needed to win three distances. Wathén and Norwegian Jens Schwartz were the ones who came closest. Wathén won the opening 500 m, but he was 8,6 seconds behind the 5000 m winner, and he was 2 seconds behind Schwartz, who won the 1500 m.
He was Finnish Champion six years in a row (1899-1904).
