Chad Hedrick

* 17 April 1977 – Unknown

Chad Hedrick, from Spring, Texas, started his career as a successfull inline skater. He won 50 World Championship titles (1994-2002) and 2 Pan American Games medals (1999) in indoor short track and outdoor road racing on USA Roller Sports Inline Team.

KC Boutiette, also a former inliner, introduced Hedrick to speed skating. Disappointed by the fact that inline skating would not be an Olympic event in 2004, and inspired by former inliners Derek Parra and Jennifer Rodriguez, who had great success in the 2002 Winter Olympics, he decided to try speed skating and aim for Turin 2006. After only four months on ice he had a remarkable first season, placing 5th on the 5000 m at the World Single Distance Championships 2003.

The following year his technique had improved a lot, and after four great races Hedrick became World Allround Champion at Hamar ahead of his teammate Shani Davis, ending the 9-year Dutch dominance of the World Championships. Hedrick also set a new World Record in the allround combination. Six weeks later he became the first non-Dutch skater to win the 5000 m world title. Hedrick was also awarded the Oscar Mathisen Trophy in 2004.

In November 2005 he became the first to skate a sub 6.10 5000 m when he did 6.09,68 in the Calgary WC races. With this he also entered the top of the Adelskalender.
