Marianne Timmer

Maria Aaltje Timmer

* 3 October 1974 – Sappemeer, Netherlands

Marianne Timmer, born in Sappemeer, won two unexpected Olympic gold medals in Nagano 1998, becoming the third to win both 1000 m and 1500 m in the same Olympics. She won the 1000 m at the 1997 World Single Distance Championships, and she repeated this in 1999. She has also got one silver and two bronze medals from the World Single Distance Championships. She finished 3rd overall at the World Sprint Championships 2000. The following seasons did not give her much success, and she was not able to defend her Olympic titles in Salt Lake City 2002. She placed 4th on the 1000 m, just 0.21 from a medal.

Timmer competed in her first World Cup race when she was 17. She started her career as a distance skater, but she began to suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome when she was 20 and then decided to focus on the shorter distances.

In August 2001 she married her coach on the Spaar Select Team, US speed skater and former Olympic 1000 m champion Peter Mueller, at a small wedding in Las Vegas.
