It was the host of the 1972 Winter Olympic Games, the first Winter Olympic Games to be held in Asia. Sapporo was also the host of the two first Asian Winter Games held, in 1986 and 1990.
The speed skating events at the 1972 Olympics were dominated by Ard Schenk, who equaled Ivar Ballangrud and Hjalmar Andersen by winning 3 gold medals in the same Games. The track also proved to be one of the fastest lowland tracks in the world.
